It’s a snark

No, it’s a boojum! This is a boojum tree we got at the San Diego Botanical Garden in the early fall. It’s an endangered species that grows naturally only in the deserts of Baja California, but this one was grown from seed. In Lewis Carroll’s poem the boojum is a particularly nasty type of snark that causes anyone that sees it to “suddenly vanish away, and never be seen again.” This one is about 15 years old and still not that big. Due to its desert environment, it goes dormant during the summers, as in this photo.

We thought maybe we’d killed it already, but with the rains it perked right up and now it has lots of leaves. Full growth takes decades, but these can grow several meters tall.

Here’s examples from the San Diego Botanical Garden of what these trees look like as they get bigger.
